Spiced Autumn Punch Cocktail

I started Twine & Braids as a creative outlet to share recipes and DIYs, lifestyle tips and the like. But before all that my lifelong passion has always been wellness.  My full-time career is within the health and wellness field and you may notice me make some healthy swaps in my recipes here and there.  When it comes to the latest and greatest in wellness trends I’ve always been the first in line to give it a try.  Powered green juice? Yep.  Organic, plant-based protein? Duh.  Matcha everything? Sure!  Oh, and have you heard maple water is the new coconut water? So when I had the chance to try CideRoad, an organic switchel, I was all about it!

Having never heard of switchel I first checked the label.  I was sold by the organic, whole food ingredients like apple cider vinegar, pure maple syrup and ginger.  I love ginger and CideRoad definitely gives you that kick.  I’ve always wanted to be one of those people who could take a shot of apple cider vinegar in the morning and go on with my day but I can’t get over the taste.  CideRoad gives me all the health benefits of apple cider vinegar; balancing your bodies pH, detoxifying the body, etc., but tastes great.

Since I can’t leave “well” enough alone [see my green juice cocktail here] my first thought after tasting the Maple and Ginger flavor, was to use it in a cocktail.  CideRoad’s Original switchel just screams autumn to me.  Mixing it up with some rum, hard cider, lemon and a little cinnamon creates the perfect spiced autumn punch. You also can’t beat that fact that switchel is jammed packed with ingredients to help fight your morning hangover, so I’d consider keeping one or two in the fridge, ya know for emergencies.

ingredients

Makes 1 cocktail.  Directions below to increase for a larger batch!

  • 2 ounces dark rum
  • 4 ounces Original CideRoad
  • 1/2 ounce lemon juice
  • about 1/2 bottle of hard cider
  • 1 apple slice
  • cinnamon sugar for the rim
  • pomegranate seeds and/or cranberries
  • cinnamon stick

To prepare your glass; rub the apple slice around the rim to wet and coat with the cinnamon sugar.  Into an ice filled shaker add the rum, Original CideRoad, and lemon juice.  Shake and pour over ice into your prepared glass.  Top with hard cider.  Garnish with pomegranate seeds, cranberries and a cinnamon stick.

This recipe makes one cocktail but can easily be made into a large batch.  Making for a dinner party?  Multiply the above recipe by the number of guests – plus a few extra!  Pour the rum, Original CideRoad, lemon juice and hard cider into a large punch bowl or pitcher filled with ice.  Stir and garnish with a few cinnamon sticks, pomegranate seeds and cranberries.  The longer the cinnamon sticks and berries soak the better!
